Jets’ Aaron Rodgers Gets Brutally Honest On Zach Wilson’s Future

There is a strong possibility that Zach Wilson has played his last game for the New York Jets, and Aaron Rodgers seems to see the writing on the wall.

While speaking to reporters on Monday, Rodgers spoke as if he knows Wilson already has one foot out the door.

“I love Zach and I want what’s best for Zach,” said Rodgers, via the Jets’ official YouTube account. “If he wants to be here and that’s what’s best for him then obviously would love to have that relationship for another year but I want what’s best for him and where he wants to be, Sometimes a change in scenery, as I know, can be a breath of fresh air and it’s good to have a new start sometimes. I love Zach and we will still be connected and we will see what happens.”

The Jets took Wilson with the No. 2 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, but his tenure in New York has been nothing short of an unmitigated disaster.

Wilson has gone just 12-21 as a starter, throwing 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions while completing 57 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 73.2.

While the BYU product has definitely shown some flashes of talent, his three-year career has been primarily defined by head-scratching mistakes and inconsistency.

Rodgers was supposed to be under center for the Jets this season after coming over in a trade with the Green Bay Packers, but he tore his Achilles on New York’s first offensive series of Week 1, ending his year and deflating the Jets’ Super Bowl aspirations in the process.

Wilson was pressed into starting duty as a result. He played in 12 games and made 11 starts in 2023, throwing for 2,271 yards, eight touchdowns and seven picks. He missed the last three games of the campaign due to a concussion.

The 24-year-old still has another year remaining on his rookie deal, but the Jets could very well trade him this offseason.

It seems doubtful that Zach Wilson will be backing up Aaron Rodgers in 2024.
