New York Jets rookie defensive back VJ Payne is dealing with a significant setback early in his NFL career after suffering a bone bruise during training camp.
Head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed the injury on Saturday, explaining that the seventh-round pick will be sidelined for roughly three to four weeks.
Payne, selected 228th overall out of Kansas State this past April, had been impressing coaches and carving out a potential role on the depth chart.
At just 22 years old, the young safety entered camp as a long shot to make the final roster but showed enough promise that the coaching staff viewed him as someone building real momentum. That progress is now on hold.
The timing could hardly be worse. Missing three to four weeks means Payne will sit out the entire preseason, leaving him with almost no opportunity to prove himself in game situations before the Jets must trim their roster to 53 players by the end of August.
He currently ranks as the fifth safety behind established veterans Minkah Fitzpatrick and Andre Cisco, along with Malachi Moore and Dane Belton. In a competitive secondary, every practice rep and preseason snap carries extra weight for a late-round rookie fighting to stick.
Despite the disappointment, Glenn struck an optimistic note about Payne’s long-term outlook. The coach described the injury as “a pretty good bone bruise” but emphasized that the player will recover fully and remain part of the team’s plans moving forward.
Payne signed a four-year rookie contract worth approximately $4.5 million, so the Jets retain control of his rights while he rehabilitates.
The same practice session that sidelined Payne also produced a few anxious moments for Jets fans. Star pass rusher David Bailey went down in pain and limped off the field after rolling into the leg of quarterback Geno Smith.
Glenn later calmed concerns, classifying Bailey as day-to-day and noting that the defender got up under his own power. Pass rusher Kingsley Jonathan also picked up a thigh bruise but is expected to be fine.
For Payne, the coming weeks will be about patience and steady recovery. The Jets’ crowded safety room offers little margin for error, yet the organization clearly saw something in the former Wildcat when they chose him in the draft.
If he returns healthy and ready to compete once the regular season approaches, the early injury may ultimately prove little more than a temporary obstacle on what could still become a productive career in New York.
