Former Patriots QB Reveals Cowboys, Bill Belichick Theory

The New England Patriots could be parting ways with head coach Bill Belichick this coming offseason, and if they do, it would almost certainly have to be via trade.

As a result, people are already speculating on what Belichick’s next destination could be, and a popular choice is the Dallas Cowboys.

Former Patriots quarterback Scott Zolak is one of those prognosticators.

During an edition of 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Zolak and Bertrand” earlier this week, Zolak said that “everybody” he talks to “assumes” that the Cowboys will ultimately replace current coach Mike McCarthy with Belichick after the season.

“You see the Dallas swoon starting to begin,” Zolak said. “They got their (expletive) kicked by Buffalo two days ago. Buffalo did what they wanted with them. You line it up and you look at (the Cowboys), they got a big offensive line, good running back, marquee quarterback. You got good receivers. You got good cover guys. You got Lawrence Taylor Jr. in No. 11 (Micah Parsons). You got a big defensive line and good safeties. It’s turnkey for Bill.”

Belichick is under contract through next season and is due to make at least $25 million, so if the Patriots fire him, owner Robert Kraft would have to pay Belichick a hefty sum. That’s why a trade is the most likely avenue should Kraft decide that he wants to move on from Belichick.

Belichick is now in his 24th season with the Patriots and has led the franchise to six Super Bowl championships, nine Super Bowl appearances and 17 AFC East division titles. That includes 11 straight division crowns between 2009 and 2019.

However, since Tom Brady departed via free agency in March 2020, Bill Belichick and New England have fallen on hard times, making the playoffs just once and going 28-36.

The Pats are 3-11 this season. Meanwhile, the Cowboys are 10-4.

Of course, what Dallas decides to do at head coach almost certainly depends on how far the team goes in the playoffs this winter.
