The announcement of tight end Travis Kelce’s absence in Week 18 came as a surprise to the football community, given that earlier in the week, the Kansas City Chiefs had indicated that he would be taking the field to maintain his impressive streak of 1,000-yard seasons.

Kelce had managed to achieve seven consecutive seasons with at least 1,000 receiving yards, and he was just 16 yards away from reaching that milestone once again this season.

However, contrary to expectations, Kelce chose to conclude the regular season on the sidelines.

According to head coach Andy Reid’s statement to Ed Easton of USA Today on Tuesday, it was Travis Kelce’s personal decision to sit out the game.

“He is a humble, humble guy,” Reid said. “It’s different because of the financial part of it, with Chris [Jones]. [Kelce] didn’t want to be selfish or come across as selfish. All the players want him to play, but he just goes, ‘You know what? I don’t like the way it feels.’”

“He’s not into that. He chose not to play, and I completely understand it. But that’s him. Most guys would have gone out and probably done it, but he said, ‘I’ve got a lot of records on this one here; I’m not going to do it this way.’”

The Chiefs had little to gain from this particular matchup, as they were already firmly secured as the No. 3 seed in the AFC. Consequently, they opted to rest their key players, including Kelce, in preparation for the upcoming clash against the Miami Dolphins, which promises to be played in harsh, wintry conditions.

This strategic move ensures that the Chiefs will have a well-rested and prepared team to face the challenges presented by the frigid temperatures in the playoff game against the Dolphins.
