Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey apparently wanted his team to take a chance on a controversial wide receiver this past offseason: Antonio Brown.
Speaking on his Punch Line podcast this week, Humphrey explained that he tried to convince Ravens’ general manager Eric DeCosta to sign Brown.
“I texted him this offseason, I was like ‘Yo, we should sign Antonio Brown,” Humphrey said. “I’m like, ‘Yo EDC like I’m telling you like we should sign Antonio Brown. He was like, ‘Would you ever let your son go to Auburn?’ I was sitting there thinking like, I mean, and then it was like, he did not even entertain that thought. I still think, AB still AB probably right now at whatever age he is.”
DeCosta used Auburn as an example because Humphrey went to the University of Alabama, and Auburn is Alabama’s fiercest rival.
The last time Brown played in an NFL game, he was seen tearing off his shirt and running off the field at MetLife Stadium as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when his team was battling the New York Jets back in 2021. He later explained that his behavior was a result of a disagreement with the Buccaneers over how the club handled his ankle injury.
Regardless, teams aren’t exactly lining up to sign Brown.
It also seems hard to imagine that Brown is “still AB” at this juncture of his career. The last time he registered a 1,000-yard campaign came in 2018, which was his last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Of course, in his prime, Brown was one of the league’s most lethal wide outs, as he made six straight Pro Bowl appearances while also earning four First-Team All-Pro selections between 2013 and 2018. During that span, he led the NFL in receiving yards twice and receiving touchdowns once.
However, Brown is now 35 years old and has not seen NFL action in over two years. In seven games with Tampa Bay in 2021, he logged 42 catches for 545 yards and four scores.
Humphrey and the Ravens are 11-3 and will battle the San Francisco 49ers in a potential Super Bowl preview on Christmas Day.
