The much-anticipated showdown between Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo and San Antonio Spurs’ rookie Victor Wembanyama lived up to its billing in a prime-time matchup on TNT during Thursday’s NBA slate.

Antetokounmpo’s impressive 44 points and 14 rebounds in a thrilling game led the Bucks to a narrow 125-121 victory over the Spurs, despite Wembanyama’s remarkable performance on his 20th birthday, which included 27 points.

Spurs’ Devin Vassell also played a pivotal role, leading his team with 34 points. Milwaukee coach Adrian Griffin praised the matchup as a captivating display of talent and versatility from both big men, acknowledging the unique skills they bring to the game.

“That was a fun game,” Griffin said. “That was a fun game to coach, a fun game to watch. Two of the most unique, talented big men. I use that (big-man term) loosely because they are very versatile players. Man, that was fun. I thought Wemby was great, I thought Giannis was phenomenal.”

The eagerly awaited first encounter between Antetokounmpo and Wembanyama, initially delayed due to Wembanyama’s injury, showcased their abilities. Antetokounmpo commended the French rookie for his scoring prowess and winning mindset, while Wembanyama admired Antetokounmpo’s aggressive play.

“I’m a competitor, so I want to go at everyone and be the bad guy on the court,” Wembanyama said. “It was a great matchup.”
