The Houston Rockets already swung one blockbuster trade for an all-time great last summer, acquiring Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns. Could they complete another with what’s left of this offseason?
Brennan Sims of FanSided has pitched a trade idea in which the Rockets would acquire Stephen Curry from the Golden State Warriors in deal that would reshape basketball, and he outlined a monster trade package that Houston could offer the Warriors.
In the scenario Sims describes, the Rockets would send Fred VanVleet, Jabari Smith Jr., Reed Sheppard, a 2027 first-round pick from the Nets, and Houston’s own firsts in 2028 and 2030 to Golden State in exchange for Curry.
VanVleet’s expiring contract provides salary flexibility, while Smith and Sheppard represent the kind of young, high-upside pieces the Warriors would demand if they truly decide to pivot away from their longtime franchise face.
Sheppard’s shooting and playmaking development, paired with Smith’s length and defensive versatility, give Golden State a foundation to rebuild around. The draft capital softens the blow of losing Curry’s gravitational presence.
For Houston, the return is pure opportunity. The Rockets have spent recent seasons searching for consistent spacing, and Curry remains the greatest shooter the game has ever seen.
Placing him alongside Durant, Alperen Şengün, and Amen Thompson creates an offense that can stretch defenses to their breaking point. Curry’s ability to pull multiple defenders to the perimeter would open driving lanes for Thompson and post-up opportunities for Şengün, while Durant could operate as a pure scorer rather than a reluctant primary ball-handler.
The combination of elite perimeter gravity and interior size is rare, and it would immediately elevate Houston from a rising contender into a team capable of making deep playoff runs.
Sims notes that nothing is guaranteed in the Western Conference, yet the ceiling rises sharply with Curry in the mix. Houston’s defensive identity, already anchored by length and athleticism, would gain a secondary creator who can punish any defensive overcommitment.
For a franchise that has patiently built through the draft and free agency, this package represents a bold but calculated leap. It sacrifices future assets and some promising youth, but it delivers a proven winner who can accelerate the timeline and give Durant and the supporting cast a genuine shot at a championship.
From the Rockets’ view, that is a trade worth exploring. Whether or not the Warriors would be interested, however, is anyone’s guess.
Golden State is certainly in the twilight of its Curry years, and it will be interesting to see how everything ends.
