Detroit Pistons Shake Up Front Office Amid Struggles

Nothing went right for the Detroit Pistons during the 2023-24 season. Not only did they finish with the worst record for the second straight campaign, they had zero luck during the NBA Lottery again.

Despite having the highest odds for the first overall pick, the Detroit Pistons dropped in the lottery. They fell to the No. 5 spot, defying the odds again. No team had ever dropped from No. 1 to No. 5 previously; the Pistons have now had it happen in back-to-back years.

Given the abysmal track record of the team in recent seasons, some major changes are being made. Trajan Langdon is now leading the front office, and the shuffle has already begun. According to ESPN, one of the first moves was getting rid of general manager Troy Weaver.

Since being put in charge of the team’s basketball operations, the Detroit Pistons have won only 23 percent of their games. It was an ugly stretch for a once proud franchise, who will look to get back on track under Langdon’s lead.

In 2019, the New Orleans Pelicans hired Langdon as general manager and they experienced improvements in each of the last five seasons under him. The 49 victories during the 2023-24 season were the second most in franchise history.

The goal for Langdon in Detroit will be building a roster around Cade Cunningham, the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. He took a major step forward with his production during the 2023-24 season, but it didn’t help the team win any more consistently.

With an ill-fitting roster lacking star power or veteran leadership, Langdon is undertaking a massive job. But, a relatively quick turnaround could be had if the right veterans are brought in around the current group of young players that have been collected with high draft picks the last few years.
