Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has never been one to let training camp pass quietly. True to form, he used the opening of this year’s camp in Oxnard to stir the pot, making it clear that the team is actively exploring trades and is prepared to part with future draft capital in pursuit of immediate help.
Jones has long thrived on headlines, and his latest comments fit the pattern of a franchise owner unwilling to let the offseason drift without injecting some drama into the conversation.
Speaking at a press conference last week, Jones left little doubt about his mindset. He acknowledged that the Cowboys have been too cautious about deals in recent seasons and signaled a willingness to change course.
“I will domino. I will lay it out there,” Jones said. “It’s not a threat. It’s just that I will shoot. So, yeah, we’re very capable, if we get the opportunity to improve it by doing it. My message simply is that I feel good enough about this thing to give up some of the future, if the opportunity comes up.”
The remarks suggested a defensive addition could be in play, and they immediately fueled speculation across the league about which players might be available.
In the days since those comments, the rumor mill has worked overtime. Names such as Maxx Crosby, Jordyn Brooks, and even veteran free agents like Von Miller or Bobby Wagner have been floated. Crosby’s situation proved particularly complicated after a failed physical sent him back to Las Vegas, while Brooks has been viewed as a logical fit for a Cowboys defense seeking more production at linebacker.
Yet according to reporting from Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, any deal that materializes may not match the grandiose scale of Jones’s rhetoric.
Appearing on the Star Time podcast, Harris indicated that Dallas does have a particular target in mind.
“I think a trade is going to be made for somebody. Now, is it going to be substantive, as Jerry Jones put it? I don’t know,” Harris said. “But there has been one source I have had who has been pretty right before, who was like, there is a specific player the Cowboys are going after, they’re gonna make a trade for. He’s like, just call me back whenever I am right. It’s not a huge player, to be honest, but you asked for a trade, I think there will be a trade before Week 1. It will be someone you see on the field quite a bit.”
Harris also downplayed the likelihood of acquiring Brooks in the near term, noting that Miami appears committed to keeping him as a foundational piece alongside running back Devon Achane.
While a later move at the trade deadline remains possible if the Dolphins struggle, the immediate outlook points elsewhere.
For Cowboys fans, the waiting game continues. Jones has set expectations high once again, and the coming weeks will reveal whether the team can convert talk into a meaningful roster upgrade before the regular season begins.
