The Chicago Cubs entered their series against the Washington Nationals with encouraging news on one of their young infielders.
Infielder Matt Shaw, who has been sidelined since late June, traveled with the team to Washington, D.C., as he continues his rehabilitation process. The club has provided an update indicating that Shaw has recently resumed light hitting and is gradually increasing the intensity of his swings.
Shaw last appeared in a major league game on June 28. Manager Craig Counsell noted earlier that the 24-year-old remained “weeks away” from a potential return, a timeline that still appears realistic for a late-season comeback in August or September.
Before the injury interrupted his season, Shaw posted a .246 batting average with four home runs, 20 RBIs, and four stolen bases across 56 games.
Selected in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of Maryland, he is in the midst of his second big-league campaign, all of it spent with the Cubs organization.
The timing of Shaw’s progress comes as the Cubs look to maintain momentum in the National League Central. After a decisive 10-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday and an off day Monday, Chicago sat in second place in the division with a strong 69-50 record through 119 games.
The club has played solid baseball of late, going 7-3 in its previous ten contests and showing competence on the road with a 34-26 mark in 60 away games. Following the series in the nation’s capital, the Cubs will return home to face the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field.
Meanwhile, the Nationals entered the matchup in fourth place in the National League East at 59-61. Washington has struggled somewhat in recent weeks, posting a 4-6 record over its last ten games, though the club remains competitive on the road.
After hosting the Cubs, the Nationals will travel to face the New York Mets.
Shaw’s potential return would provide a boost to a Cubs lineup that has shown consistency through the middle of the season. His combination of contact ability, occasional power, and speed on the bases offers versatility that manager Craig Counsell values.
