The Dallas Cowboys added cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this month in exchange for a 2028 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick. The deal reduced the number of selections Dallas is projected to make in the 2027 draft.

Owner Jerry Jones discussed the trade Friday on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. He said the move reflected a belief in where the team is and what it can do now. Coach Brian Schottenheimer, also speaking on the station Friday, said the Cowboys are in a win-now mode.

Quarterback Dak Prescott said after the trade that a win-now move showed the organization is aligned and that ownership is not waiting. Jones, who turns 84 this month, has said he is less focused on next season than in past years.

Jones indicated Wednesday that another trade remains possible. Appearing again on 105.3 The Fan, he said the club is still open to adding an impactful player, using language similar to comments he made before the Porter deal.

“The door is always open to get better. I’m open. We’re open,” Jones said.

He did not name a player, a position or a team. He also did not say a deal was close or set a deadline for further moves.

The Porter trade was completed after Dallas opened the season 1-2. Jones said Friday he hopes the addition improves the roster and that Porter finds a higher level of play in Dallas. He compared the hope for the deal to last year’s trade for wide receiver George Pickens, while noting that those expectations are high.

Schottenheimer said Friday that the Cowboys look for players and that other teams call because Dallas is willing to make deals. He cited Prescott’s play and the receivers already on the roster as reasons the team is operating in win-now mode.

Prescott said Thursday that the Porter trade mattered because it showed ownership acting rather than waiting. Jones said Friday that he agreed with that assessment.

After sending the second-round pick to Pittsburgh, Dallas is in line for four selections in the 2027 draft, according to draft-order projections. The Steelers are in line for nine, including three that originally belonged to the Cowboys.

Jones has described the Porter acquisition as a decision aimed at the current season. Wednesday’s comments kept open the possibility of another addition even after that draft capital was spent.

No transaction beyond the Porter trade has been announced. League rosters can still change through in-season trades, and teams routinely discuss possible deals without completing them.

Jones did not say whether any talks are active at this point in time.

His Wednesday remarks did not commit the club to another move. They also did not close off further discussions.

Jones said the organization remains willing to improve the roster. That approach is one Jones has always had throughout his time with the Cowboys.
