Von Miller, the veteran edge rusher who spent recent seasons with the Washington Commanders and Buffalo Bills, appears to be positioning himself for a potential homecoming as his NFL journey nears its conclusion. Now a free agent following the conclusion of his brief stint with the Washington Commanders, Miller has not generated significant interest from teams as training camps draw near.
With limited options on the horizon, the pass rusher has begun signaling his strong desire to join a familiar franchise close to his roots.
In a notable social media update highlighted by NBC Sports, Miller shared an image of himself sporting a Dallas Cowboys jersey, accompanied by a discreet “shhh” emoji. This subtle gesture has fueled speculation about his next destination, especially given his deep personal ties to the area.
Growing up just outside the city, Miller has long expressed affection for the Cowboys organization and sees clear advantages in making such a move at this stage of his professional life.
“I grew up here in Dallas,” Miller said. “I’ve always had a special place in my heart for the Dallas Cowboys. If I played for the Dallas Cowboys this year, I [would] only have to drive 20 minutes to work. This would be the first time that my mom and dad don’t have to fly to every single game. My mom has been to every single game that I’ve ever played in, and she’ll be able to drive to all the home games, and you know I got so many family members here. My kids are here. My family is here; [my] girlfriend is here. Everybody’s here. It’d just be easy to work it out, so you never really know.”
Miller’s time in Buffalo started promisingly but quickly unraveled due to injuries and off-field challenges. He began the 2022 campaign with strong performances before a torn ACL ended his season prematurely. Upon returning the following year, the former All-Pro found it difficult to recapture his earlier speed and explosiveness, resulting in minimal contributions throughout 2023.
Matters worsened in 2024 when he faced a suspension linked to domestic assault allegations, prompting the Bills to move on from him after that season.
Seeking a fresh start, Miller signed a one-year contract with the Washington Commanders. However, he has since voiced disappointment over how that chapter unfolded. The team, which had shown encouraging signs with a playoff appearance the prior year, experienced a noticeable decline during his tenure. This outcome contrasted sharply with what might have been, as another squad Miller considered ultimately achieved the ultimate success.
“For me, with the Washington Commanders, I just felt like Jayden Daniels was poised for another great season,” Miller said. “His rookie season went all the way to the NFC Championship, and last year, he got hit with injuries, not just at the quarterback position, but all over the place. And those are some of the things that you just can’t calculate on teams.”
The edge rusher’s regrets extend beyond on-field results, as he reflected on missed opportunities elsewhere in the league. While the Commanders took a step backward, the Seattle Seahawks advanced all the way to claim the Super Bowl title that same season.
Such developments have left Miller contemplating what could have been and reinforcing his preference for a return to familiar surroundings where logistical and emotional factors align more favorably.
At this point in his career, joining the Cowboys would offer more than just competitive opportunities. The proximity to family members would simplify travel and allow greater involvement in personal life, reducing the strains that long-distance commitments have imposed for years.
Miller’s mother, known for her unwavering support by attending every contest, stands to benefit immensely from games that require only a short drive rather than cross-country flights.
Whether the Cowboys organization, led by Jerry Jones, will pursue the veteran remains uncertain. Yet Miller’s public comments and social media activity suggest he would welcome serious discussions if interest materializes. His experience and past accolades could still provide value in a rotational role, particularly for a team seeking additional depth on the defensive line.
As the free agency period winds down and rosters begin finalizing ahead of the new season, all eyes will be on potential developments involving Miller and his hometown squad.
