Steven Kwan has spent more than a year as a fixture in Cleveland Guardians trade speculation, a conversation that has never fully gone away even as the reasons behind it have shifted.
Sometimes the talk has centered on the organization’s familiar habit of moving players before their contracts expire. Other times it has focused on whether Kwan’s elite contact skills still fit the way the Guardians want to construct their lineup.
Either way, the left fielder’s name has remained in circulation long enough that fans have grown accustomed to hearing it.
That conversation now has a clearer deadline. Kwan is under club control through the 2027 season, after which he will reach free agency. Cleveland has historically preferred to trade impending free agents rather than pay them at market rate on extensions, and Kwan appears next in that line.
A potential work stoppage could scramble the calendar, but the timing still points toward this offseason as the most logical window to act.
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand captured the situation directly in a recent look at trade candidates.
“The two-time All-Star has been dangled as a trade candidate in the past, and with only one year remaining until free agency and no extension seemingly in sight, Cleveland could look to move Kwan to bring back younger, more controllable talent,” Feinsand wrote.
That last phrase is the heart of the matter. The Guardians would not be shopping Kwan simply to dump salary. They would be trying to convert one remaining year of a proven big-leaguer into younger players they can keep for several seasons.
Any club acquiring Kwan would almost certainly want some indication that he is open to an extension in his new city. Without that, Cleveland would be asking for a sizable return on a rental, a deal that is often difficult to complete.
Kwan’s 2026 numbers add another layer. His home run and RBI totals are modest, yet his on-base percentage and overall value have climbed back toward the levels he posted as a rookie.
He continues to control the strike zone and play excellent defense, skills that still travel well even if the power has not returned.
A lockout would freeze most of this activity. Teams are unlikely to make aggressive moves until they know the next collective bargaining agreement’s rules. In that scenario, Kwan could remain in Cleveland for his final year of arbitration, rumors and all.
Given how long his name has already lingered in the rumor mill, though, it would not be shocking if the Guardians still found a way to move him before that last season begins. The window is simply getting smaller.
