As the NFL Draft approaches, the Cleveland Browns are poised to make a pivotal decision with their No. 2 overall pick. Most speculation points toward a new quarterback, with many analysts predicting Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders or Miami’s Cam Ward as the top signal-callers likely to be snatched up early—potentially landing one in Cleveland.
However, an unexpected twist has emerged in the draft conversation, courtesy of ESPN’s Todd McShay, who sees the Browns making a different decision.
While McShay agrees that Cleveland is in the market for a quarterback, he’s not convinced they’ll pull the trigger at No. 2. Instead, he’s advocating for a Day 2 surprise: former Oregon, Texas Tech, and Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough.
“He has been through all these wars. He knows who he is,” McShay said on the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show. “It’s like he’s playing on house money, and I love a quarterback who’s got that kind of mentality because he’s got a chip but he’s mature enough to know how to manage all of that that’s going on inside between his ears. I think he’s going to be an absolute steal in this class, I really do.”
Shough’s journey to this point has been anything but typical. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound quarterback spent seven seasons in college football, navigating a winding path through three different programs.
He started with three years at Oregon, followed by three at Texas Tech, before capping his collegiate career at Louisville in 2024.
Last season, he showcased his arm, throwing for 3,195 yards, 23 touchdowns, and just six interceptions, while completing 62.7 percent of his passes. Those numbers suggest potential, but his age and uneven career trajectory raise questions.
Turning 26 in September—just as the NFL season kicks off—Shough doesn’t fit the mold of the young, moldable prospects teams typically covet early in the draft. His prototypical NFL frame is an asset, but his resume lacks the consistent dominance that often defines top picks. For many teams, he’s likely a project—a developmental player with upside but plenty of risk.
McShay, however, sees something different. Shough’s extensive college experience, spanning multiple systems and challenges, could be a hidden strength. If the Browns pass on the flashier names at No. 2 and gamble on Shough later, it could end up paying off for them.
As draft day nears, the question looms: Will Cleveland stick to the script and grab a Sanders or Ward, or will they roll the dice on McShay’s dark horse? For now, Shough remains an intriguing wildcard in a draft full of possibilities for the Cleveland Browns.
