Clemson will finish the 2026 season without starting nickelback Corian Gipson after a meniscus injury that requires surgery.

Head coach Dabo Swinney delivered the update Monday on his weekly teleconference as the Tigers head into an open week.

Gipson aggravated the knee during Saturday’s 41-13 loss to No. 4 Miami at Memorial Stadium. He had just returned to the lineup for that game after sitting out the previous week’s win over California.

Across 35 defensive snaps against the Hurricanes, Gipson recorded five tackles, one forced fumble and one pass breakup.

“That’s a big, big loss for us,” Swinney said. “I really hate that for him, as he had just gotten back.”

The junior nearly produced a turnover when he punched the ball away from Miami quarterback Darian Mensah at the goal line, though Mensah recovered it in the end zone.

Gipson later broke up a third-down pass near Clemson’s goal line, forcing the Hurricanes to settle for a field goal. He ends the year with 17 tackles in the four games he played.

The knee issue first surfaced in the North Carolina game on Sept. 19, when he exited after the opening series, and it kept him out of the California trip entirely.

A follow-up MRI led doctors to recommend surgery, with a recovery expected to take three to four months.

Gipson is the fourth notable Clemson player lost for the season since August.

Freshman defensive back Polo Anderson tore his ACL during preseason camp. Oklahoma transfer defensive tackle Markus Strong and running back David Eziomume also suffered season-ending leg injuries.

Swinney said safety Ronan Hanafin will receive more work at the Tiger position, Clemson’s nickel spot.

Auburn transfer Donovan Starr is expected to take on a larger role, while senior Branden Strozier provides another experienced option.

Cornerback Ashton Hampton could move inside on certain weeks if defensive coordinator Tom Allen wants a premium slot receiver matched up tightly, with Strozier shifting to the outside.

The secondary had drawn notice for its play in recent weeks before the latest setback.

Clemson sits at 3-2 and returns home Oct. 17 against FCS Charleston Southern after the bye.

Running back Jarvis Green is dealing with a shoulder injury and is expected to miss a couple of weeks, including the Charleston Southern game.

The open date arrives while the staff continues to manage additional recoveries elsewhere on the roster.
