Retired Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw addressed widespread criticism of the team’s latest blockbuster acquisition during a recent television appearance.
The 11-time All-Star, who spent his entire 18-year major league career with the Dodgers, spoke on the “Sunday Night Baseball” broadcast covering the club’s game against the Boston Red Sox.
Kershaw, who stepped away from the game after representing Team USA in this year’s World Baseball Classic, shared the mound with Tarik Skubal during that international tournament. Los Angeles completed a major trade Saturday night, obtaining the two-time American League Cy Young Award winner from the Detroit Tigers.
Dodgers supporters celebrated the addition of the elite starter as the franchise pursues a third straight World Series championship. Reaction across much of the rest of Major League Baseball proved far less enthusiastic, with many observers arguing the deal further concentrates talent among the sport’s wealthiest clubs.
Kershaw pushed back against that frustration while discussing the transaction on air.
“The Rays, Brewers, even the Yankees had the prospects to go out and get Tarik Skubal,” Kershaw said. “You can be mad all you want. At the end of the day, they had the chance to go out and get him.”
The Hall of Fame-bound pitcher emphasized that multiple organizations possessed the minor league talent necessary to construct competitive offers for Skubal.
Los Angeles ultimately parted with outfielder Zyhir Hope, ranked No. 25 among MLB prospects, along with right-handed pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith to complete the deal.
Several rival clubs, including those Kershaw specifically named, elected not to match or exceed that package of young talent.
One possible factor in those decisions involved uncertainty over whether Skubal would ultimately sign a long-term extension only with the Dodgers following the current season. Regardless of those considerations, the Dodgers operated strictly within the existing framework of baseball’s economic system.
The absence of a salary cap continues to generate significant debate throughout the sport.
Kershaw’s comments underscored that other teams had realistic paths to acquire the left-hander yet chose different approaches. The trade strengthens an already formidable Dodgers rotation as the club maintains its position among the National League’s top contenders.
Skubal’s arrival marks another high-profile move by a franchise that has dominated recent postseason play.
Kershaw, now retired, remains connected to the organization through his long tenure and recent international experience alongside the newly acquired pitcher. His remarks on the broadcast offered a straightforward defense of the club’s aggressive strategy.
