The Toronto Blue Jays completed a trade Sunday involving veteran right-hander Kevin Gausman, sending the pitcher to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for two minor league prospects.

The club confirmed the deal through a social media post.

“OFFICIAL: We’ve acquired OF Brett Bateman & INF Ty Southisene from the Cubs in exchange for RHP Kevin Gausman.”

Gausman was in his fifth season with Toronto. This year he compiled a 5-10 record and a 4.38 ERA across 23 starts.

Shortly after the announcement, the Blue Jays shared an emotional farewell directed at the pitcher.

The organization stated, “From the minute you became a Blue Jay, you embraced this city and this country as if it was your own. Thank you, Gausy, for all that you’ve meant to this team, to this community, to our clubhouse, and to this fanbase.”

Gausman, now 35, was selected in the first round of the 2012 MLB Draft. Over 14 major league seasons he has also pitched for the Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants and Cincinnati Reds.

The two-time All-Star owns a career mark of 117-123 with a 3.85 ERA in 384 appearances, including 345 starts.Last season he played a key role as the Blue Jays advanced to the World Series.

The move comes as Toronto continues its campaign, while Gausman heads to Chicago for the remainder of the year.

Heading to the Cubs was an excellent destination for Gausman. He will have a chance to play a major role on a team that is expected to be a potential World Series contender in the National League.

At the time of this writing, Chicago holds a 63-49 record. That has them placed second in the NL Central division race, but the Cubs are at the top of the NL Wild Card standings.

Only time will tell whether or not they end up being a championship caliber team. However, the addition of Gausman is a big step in the right direction. He will immediately be asked to play a crucial role for a rotation that has been riddled with injury troubles all season long.
