The Chicago Bears have been busy this offseason, doing a phenomenal job of addressing their offensive line to make things easier for Caleb Williams next year.
However, the Bears still need to address their defense, which finished just 27th in the NFL this past season. Chicago could really use some help with its pass rush, which totaled only 40 sacks in 2024.
Yes, the Bears signed Dayo Odeyingbo in free agency, but they could use a top-tier talent in the trenches, and Mason Cameron of Pro Football Focus knows how they can achieve that feat, proposing that it swings a big trade in the NFL Draft
Cameron has proposed that Chicago trades the 10th overall pick and No. 41 to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for the fifth pick, where it would then select Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter.
“If this offseason has taught us anything, it’s that Bears general manager Ryan Poles isn’t shy about flexing his draft capital when he sees an opportunity,” Cameron wrote. “That very well could be the situation this team will find itself in should Abdul Carter fall out of the top four, the result of two quarterbacks being selected within that range or perhaps Will Campbell’s length concerns not scaring away a team like New England.”
Of course, the chances of Carter making it past the top four are very, very slim. As a matter of fact, many are starting to project that the Cleveland Browns will select him at No. 2.
If Carter does slip to No. 5, however, the Bears would be wise to make a move for him, as the Nittany Lions superstar is widely viewed as a generational talent. As a matter of fact, some have even labeled him the best all-around player in this draft class.
The 21-year-old racked up 68 tackles, 24 tackles for loss and 12 sacks in 2024 and accumulated 23 sacks throughout his three-year tenure in Happy Valley.
Chicago has long been searching for a top-flight pass rusher ever since trading Khalil Mack, and Carter could prove to be the solution it has been searching for.
Again, though, Carter probably won’t fall far enough for the Bears to make this happen.
