Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams continues to spark debate across the league as he enters his third NFL campaign.

In ESPN’s annual survey of executives, coaches, and scouts conducted by Jeremy Fowler, the former No. 1 overall pick received sharply contrasting assessments that highlight both his extraordinary upside and the areas where he still needs refinement.

One defensive coach described Williams as “wildly erratic” while quickly emphasizing the young signal-caller’s undeniable gifts.

The coach elaborated: “Doesn’t always take the layups and still needs to mature into the position. [He] has some of those ‘what is he doing?’ plays. But he also makes plays only he and [Patrick] Mahomes can make. [He] can throw from any angle, deceptively fast when forced to scramble and he’s got the ‘it’ factor in crunch time.”

Despite those critiques, Williams secured the No. 10 spot in the rankings of top quarterbacks for the upcoming season, edging out several established and rising talents including Sam Darnold, Jordan Love, and Jayden Daniels.

Among that group, one general manager went so far as to label him the “most dynamic,” adding, “He’s got the arm talent and overall athleticism suited for today’s game.”

The full top 10 list placed Buffalo’s Josh Allen at No. 1, followed by Patrick Mahomes, Matthew Stafford, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Dak Prescott, Justin Herbert, Drake Maye, and Jared Goff. Williams’ position reflects a solid but not yet elite consensus on his development.

On the field, Williams’ second season showed clear maturation even if the raw numbers looked somewhat familiar. He passed for 3,942 yards with 27 touchdowns and just seven interceptions, though his completion percentage sat at 58.1 percent.

The real strides came in pocket presence and decision-making under pressure. He absorbed 44 fewer sacks than in his rookie year and demonstrated composure in critical moments, never appearing overwhelmed when games hung in the balance.

Williams orchestrated six game-winning drives over the course of the season. His standout performance came in the NFC Wild Card round against the Green Bay Packers, where he delivered 361 passing yards and two touchdowns in a victory that showcased his signature creativity and ability to improvise under duress. Those flashes echo the Mahomes-like comparisons that followed him out of college, where his willingness to extend plays and create off-script often produced highlight-reel moments.

That same improvisational style has been a double-edged sword. While it allows Williams to generate magic that few other quarterbacks can match, it has occasionally led to him holding the ball too long and inviting negative plays. The progress in his sophomore year suggests he is learning to balance that creativity with smarter, more disciplined choices.

As the Bears look ahead, the central question surrounding Williams revolves around his potential ceiling. If he continues building on the composure and efficiency gains from 2025, many believe he could climb well into the upper tier of NFL quarterbacks. For now, the league’s evaluators see a player brimming with talent who remains a work in progress—one capable of breathtaking plays but still polishing the consistency required to lead a championship contender.

The coming season will likely provide the clearest indication yet of whether Williams can transform those dynamic flashes into sustained excellence at the game’s highest level.
