The St. Louis Cardinals have brought back left-handed pitcher Josh Fleming on a minor league contract, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Fleming, who spent the final weeks of the 2026 season at Triple-A Memphis, returns to an organization that already holds a familiar group of starting options heading into 2027.

Fleming’s 2026 path was circuitous. The Toronto Blue Jays signed him to a minor league deal the previous winter.

He opened the year in the minors, earned a brief call-up in early April, and allowed four earned runs in three innings in his only major league appearance.

Toronto designated him for assignment; after clearing waivers he re-signed on another minor league pact. The Blue Jays released him in early July.

He then joined the Chicago Cubs organization for roughly a month before landing with the Cardinals for the stretch run.

His Triple-A results varied by stop. With the affiliates of Toronto and Chicago he posted ERAs in the low threes, yet the results deteriorated once he reached Memphis.

Across 29⅔ innings there, he surrendered 21 earned runs and nine home runs in six starts. Those struggles leave him as a depth arm rather than a clear contender for a major league role.

The Cardinals’ 2026 rotation was defined more by durability than by star power. Michael McGreevy, Kyle Leahy, Andre Pallante, and Matthew Liberatore each made at least 29 starts.

Dustin May logged 31 starts overall, though ten of them came after a trade-deadline move to Milwaukee. Quinn Mathews entered the rotation for the final two months and will likely replace May in the projected 2027 staff.

Behind that core sit younger options such as Brycen Mautz, Cooper Hjerpe, and Richard Fitts.

Fleming, at 30 and with more than 250 major league innings already logged across stints with the Rays, Pirates, and Blue Jays, is the most experienced member of that secondary group.

At this stage of his career, he offers limited upside, yet his ability to absorb innings if injuries arise remains useful.

For a club that finished 77-85 and fourth in the National League Central, the signing fits a broader pattern of assembling affordable depth rather than chasing high-profile free-agent starters.

Fleming will begin 2027 in the minors, available if the rotation needs an extra arm. Whether that opportunity materializes will depend on the health of the group that carried the bulk of the workload last season.
