Browns’ Shedeur Sanders Fires Back at Deshaun Watson Concern

Shedeur Sanders, Cleveland Browns
Cleveland Browns quarterbacks Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson take part in a drill on the first day of minicamp at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus of the Cleveland Browns in Berea, Ohio on June 9, 2026.

As the Cleveland Browns prepare for another critical training camp, their two primary quarterbacks are demonstrating a level of maturity and professionalism that could ease tensions in what remains an open competition for the starting job.

Shedeur Sanders, the promising young signal-caller, recently joined forces with veteran Deshaun Watson for a joint workout in Florida, bringing together key offensive weapons to build chemistry well before pads come on.

The session included standout pass-catchers such as Jerry Jeudy, Isaiah Bond, Denzel Boston, and Dylan Sampson, giving both quarterbacks valuable reps with the receivers and backs who will be central to the team’s plans under head coach Todd Monken.

Watson has been active throughout the offseason organizing and participating in similar sessions, but this collaborative effort highlighted a shared commitment to the greater good of the offense rather than individual agendas.

During mandatory minicamp, Sanders had made his intentions clear. He emphasized that the quarterback room operates as a collective unit, rejecting any notion of separate camps that might force teammates to pick sides.

“I think we’re a team. If one of us choose to do something, we’re all gonna do it together. It’s not no individual thing. That’s the thing, the quarterback room, we all connected, we all cool,” Sanders said. “We all communicate. It’s nobody single, individual idea because that creates separation … we all a team. We all gonna come as one, we all gonna get together as one team, and get things done.”

By showing up alongside Watson in Florida, Sanders delivered on that promise, reinforcing the message that the Browns’ offense would move forward together.

This approach comes at an important time. Some observers, including NFL insider Albert Breer, had expressed concerns that an unresolved quarterback situation could create unnecessary friction. Breer noted that if two quarterbacks developed rival camps, requiring skill players to choose between them, it could signal deeper issues within the locker room and potentially divide the team.

The joint workout appears to have alleviated those worries for now. While the competition between Sanders and Watson remains intense—neither has been named the clear starter—the camaraderie on display removes one potential source of drama as the team heads into camp.

Rookies are set to report on July 23, with veterans following shortly after on July 28. Monken has indicated that the true test will come once the pads go on and the quarterbacks face live, unscripted situations.

Sanders enters this phase with fresh momentum. The second-year quarterback recently attended the ESPY Awards in New York, where he handled interviews, photo opportunities, and even crossed paths with former teammate Myles Garrett. He also dropped a new song titled “Turn Back.” Yet the Florida session signals that his focus has shifted squarely back to football as the most pivotal stretch of the quarterback battle approaches.

Watson, drawing on his experience, processing skills, and athleticism, held an early edge, but Sanders made noticeable strides throughout the offseason program. The Browns’ offense has multiple options to work with, particularly with Jeudy projected as the top receiver and dynamic contributors like Bond, Boston, and Sampson providing versatility. How the two quarterbacks perform in camp and preseason will ultimately decide who takes the first snap of the regular season.

For now, the story in Cleveland is one of unity amid competition. By choosing collaboration over division, Sanders and Watson are setting a tone that could benefit the entire locker room as the Browns chase consistency and success in a demanding AFC North. The coming weeks in Berea will reveal much more, but the early signs point to a quarterback room committed to winning as one.
