The Boston Red Sox made a decisive roster adjustment on Tuesday, designating catcher Jake Rogers for assignment just ahead of their matchup with the Toronto Blue Jays.

The move cleared space to activate Adley Rutschman from the injured list, returning the three-time All-Star to the active roster barely a week after Boston acquired him from the Baltimore Orioles.

Rutschman had been sidelined since July 20 with a wrist injury. His return places him in the third spot in the Red Sox lineup at Rogers Centre, giving the club an immediate upgrade behind the plate and in the middle of the order.

The 27-year-old switch-hitter arrived in Boston with a solid track record, having posted a .251 average with eight home runs and 47 RBI in 67 games for the Orioles before the injury.

To free a spot on the 40-man roster, the team also shifted infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa to the 60-day injured list, a signal that he is not expected back before September roster expansion.

Rogers’ time in a Red Sox uniform proved brief but productive. Acquired alongside Rutschman in the six-player deal that sent Carlos Narváez and several prospects to Baltimore, the 31-year-old was activated the day after the trade as temporary insurance while Rutschman completed his rehab.

In three starts, Rogers reached base safely each time. He delivered a standout 2-for-3 performance with two doubles, an RBI, and three runs scored during a 13-1 win over the Athletics, then added another hit two days later.

Across nine plate appearances, he batted .500 with a 1.389 OPS, numbers that made him a useful bridge option rather than a long-term fixture once the higher-profile catcher was ready.

Rogers’ recent path has been unusually restless. Detroit designated him for assignment on July 28. The Orioles claimed him two days later, only to include him in the package shipped to Boston.

Across those three organizations in 2026 he has hit just .183 with three home runs in 104 at-bats. A career .199 hitter over six major-league seasons, the Canyon, Texas native has long been valued more for his defense and pitch-framing than his bat. A third-round pick by the Houston Astros out of Tulane in 2016, he is eligible for free agency after the season.

The Red Sox finalized the transaction roughly 40 minutes before first pitch, after earlier reports indicated the corresponding roster moves were still being settled. With Rutschman now in place, Connor Wong shifts into a backup role.

Rogers heads to waivers; if he clears, Boston can outright him to the minors or he can elect free agency based on his service time.

The move underscores the club’s intent to solidify its catching situation for the remainder of the season while giving Rutschman a chance to contribute immediately in a critical stretch.
