As the Boston Celtics attempt to win the NBA Finals, what is their biggest fear coming into the offseason?

With the Boston Celtics up on the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals, the franchise is once again hoping to raise a banner in the TD Garden next fall. While building mostly through the draft with their two stars Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, the Celtics have done a nice job surrounding their two foundational pieces with players that complement them well.

As a well-built franchise on the court, it has resulted in the Celtics having to pay a lot of money to keep their core together. Recently, Bleacher Report spoke about what the biggest fear for the Celtics should be this offseason.

They said the biggest fear will be keeping the core together. Here’s what they had to say about the situation.

According to CapSheets.com, Boston’s roster and luxury tax payments already project to come in at $252 million next season, with the Celtics clearing the second apron by $5.4 million. This is before Tatum’s massive raise kicks in.

Will Boston’s ownership group be OK with paying historical amounts of luxury tax for this team to win, or will one of the key players be moved?

With a championship on the doorstep, the players and coaches certainly aren’t thinking about the offseason for the Boston Celtics right now. However, the front office and ownership have likely had discussions about what the offseason could look like, and some of that may depend on if the Celtics beat the Mavericks.

If the Celtics win the title, it would be a tough look for ownership and the front office to make significant changes because of money and not trying to run it back. Currently up 3-0 at the time of submission, it looks like they will be raising banner No. 18.

However, the NBA is a business and the Celtics ownership might not be willing to shell out extra money in the luxury tax. While this is a good fear to have for the Boston Celtics, it is one to keep an eye on.
