The Baltimore Orioles faced a stiff test this week, heading on the road to face the New York Yankees. Right behind the Bronx Bombers in the AL East standings, this was a chance to gain some ground. Led by Gunnar Henderson, that is exactly what they did.
Following Thursday’s drubbing, a 17-5 victory, Gunnar Henderson spoke to reporters and talked about how the team finds success. Not only against the Yankees but in general, as they are now 49-25 and only a half-game behind the Yankees for first place in the AL East.
“It’s just a testament to the guys we have here and just the way we play ball,” Henderson told reporters postgame. “It doesn’t matter what happens. It seems like we’re always going to go out there and play our best ball and just try to win games.”
Gunnar Henderson was spectacular in the series, adding to his MVP resume as the Baltimore Orioles went 2-1. He helped big time, going 5-for-13 at the plate with three doubles, six runs scored and one RBI.
“It’s what you look forward to, these types of games, just having that many runs,” Henderson continued. “Toward the back half of the game, kind of take a breath. It was really fun.”
Tensions ran high throughout the series, as several batters were hit by pitches. Gunnar Henderson was drilled at one point, likely in retaliation for Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres being plunked earlier in the series.
There were no bench-clearing incidents, but these are two teams that don’t seem to like each other much. It is another layer added to the rivalry, as they look to be the cream of the crop in the American League.
But, retaliation isn’t what Gunnar Henderson or the Baltimore Orioles were focused on. They knew the thing that would sting the Yankees most was giving them losses, not hitting their batters with pitches.
“We just go out there and play our game,” Henderson said. “It’s just a testament to our guys. We’re just gonna go play our game and try to win ballgames.” (H/T Heavy)
This was the second series of the season between the teams. The Baltimore Orioles are 5-2 thus far, with four games being played at home and three at Yankee Stadium. In the final series before the All-Star Break, the AL East rivals will face off again at Camden Yards.
