As the Milwaukee Brewers hope to hold on to their lead in the NL Central, who would be a perfect trade target for them?
In what may have been a bit of a surprise to some, the Milwaukee Brewers are in first place in the NL Central as we head into July. With their success, the Brewers should be buyers and they need to address some areas of need.
During the offseason, the Brewers made a blockbuster trade to send Corbin Burnes to the Baltimore Orioles. As one of the best pitchers in baseball, Burnes is having a great season for the Orioles and the Brewers certainly miss him.
Recently, ESPN spoke about who would be a perfect trade target for the Milwaukee Brewers. Here’s what they had to say.
Weakness: Rotation depth
Best match: Jack Flaherty
As pleasant a surprise as the emergence of Tobias Myers over the past month has been, Milwaukee doesn’t want to go into October without fortifying its rotation. Crochet would also make sense for the Brewers to address that need — and they certainly like him — but Milwaukee can make the case that Flaherty is every bit as good of a fit at a fraction of the trade return.
In his first season with the Detroit Tigers, Flaherty is pitching very well after a tough second half of the season with the Orioles in 2023. This season, Flaherty is pitching to an ERA of 2.92 and has a WAR of 2.4.
Flaherty is familiar with pitching in the NL Central from his days with the St. Louis Cardinals and he would be a nice addition for Milwaukee. Adding a starter for the Brewers could help solidify them in the NL Central.
With a lot of talented teams in the NL like the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers, the Milwuakee Brewers will need to make some serious upgrades to be contenders.
