The event, registering a magnitude of around 5.0 to 5.1, marked one of the strongest tremors in the area in more than a century, catching many by surprise in a part of the country not typically known for seismic activity.
The quake originated roughly 24 miles southeast of Miami, Texas, with its epicenter located in the Panhandle at a relatively shallow depth of approximately 3.4 miles beneath the surface.
It occurred shortly after 5:20 a.m. local time, sending vibrations that rippled outward and were perceptible in nearby communities.
According to seismic records, this tremor stands out as the most powerful ever documented in the Texas Panhandle.
Historically, the region has seen very few significant earthquakes, with only a handful of events reaching magnitude 4.0 or higher since the beginning of the 20th century. This rarity added to the sense of unease among those who felt the ground move.
Reports indicate that the shaking reached as far as Amarillo, Texas, and extended into Oklahoma, where people in Oklahoma City and even Tulsa noticed the effects.
