The Kansas City Chiefs enter the 2026 NFL season with renewed optimism after bolstering their roster through free agency and the draft. Yet one position continues to stand out as a potential vulnerability: wide receiver.
In response, analysts are already forecasting that the defending champions could look to the trade market for reinforcements, with Arizona Cardinals wideout Michael Wilson emerging as a compelling target.
SB Nation’s Jarrett Bailey has predicted that the Chiefs will make a calculated midseason move to bring in the young pass-catcher.
“After sweeping the Broncos, the Chiefs are 6-1 and looking to add another offensive weapon to put them over the top in the AFC. They send a fourth-round pick to the Cardinals in exchange for Wilson, who is coming off a 1,000-yard season in 2025,” Bailey wrote.
Wilson, a former third-round selection out of Stanford, remains relatively unknown to many casual observers despite his recent progress.
Last season, he delivered impressive production on a struggling Arizona squad that finished just 3-14. Retaining Wilson through another productive year might improve the team’s win total more than desired while also increasing his future contract value heading into free agency. Trading him now could yield a better immediate return than waiting for a compensatory selection later.
For the Chiefs, the addition would address lingering depth concerns in the receiver room. Despite bringing in running back Kenneth Walker III and rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane, questions persist around the passing attack.
Patrick Mahomes is expected back under center, but the group features uncertainties surrounding Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice as they enter key years in their careers. Wilson’s skill set, which includes reliable hands and solid blocking ability, could provide valuable versatility and insurance against injuries that have plagued the position in recent seasons.
At a modest $3.9 million base salary for 2026, Wilson represents excellent value on the final year of his rookie deal. Kansas City would retain flexibility moving forward, with options to extend him or pivot to the draft and free agency depending on how the season unfolds.
