Charlotte Hornets Linked to Veteran Guard This Offseason

The Charlotte Hornets could make additional moves this offseason to prepare for the 2026-27 NBA season.

Charlotte made headlines earlier this month by trading away star point guard LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a massive four-team deal. The move leaves a hole on the roster, with the organization needing a backup point guard. Luckily, general manager and executive Jeff Peterson could have a trick up his sleeve.

According to HoopHype’s Michael Scotto, the Hornets have been linked to Cleveland Cavaliers’ veteran point guard Dennis Schroder this offseason.

“The Charlotte Hornets have been linked with interest in Schroder, league sources told HoopsHype,” Scotto wrote. “It’s worth noting that Hornets executive Jeff Peterson is said to still be a fan of Schroder dating back to their time together in Atlanta.”

The Hornets are in an intriguing spot heading into the 2026-27 season after the recent trade of Ball.

As the former No. 3 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, Ball was the catalyst for Charlotte’s offense last season. The do-it-all playmaker closed out his 2025-26 campaign averaging 20.1 points, 7.1 assists, and 4.8 rebounds. However, with the emergance of Kon Knuepple and Brandon Miller, the Hornets felt this was the right time to move on from Ball.

The Hornets’ decision to trade Ball leaves a void in the team’s rotation. But fortunately for fans, this could be addressed by a veteran guard such as Schroder this offseason.

Charlotte managed to find Ball’s replacement during the most recent NBA trade deadline in point guard Coby White. The 26-year-old averaged 17 points and four assists, but is now set to take over the starting role in 2026-27.

If the Hornets are willing to trade for Schroder, the experienced ball handler would be an excellent backup to White next season.

Schroder was a mid-season acquisition by Cleveland in a deal with the Sacramento Kings that included point guard Keon Ellis. The 32-year-old played a key role during the Cavaliers’ playoff run as a much-needed defender off the bench.

It’s clear that Cleveland wants to move off his massive contract to pursue veteran LeBron James this offseason. A deal for Schroder could clear cap space for the Cavaliers, while also giving Charlotte a veteran in its backcourt.
