Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones elected to hold on to head coach Mike McCarthy in spite of incessant calls for his dismissal following the team’s latest playoff failure last January.

However, McCarthy is in the final year of his contract, and the heat is on.

Following the Cowboys’ blowout loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 2, Jones didn’t seem overly concerned, but he did place some pressure on the shoulders of McCarthy regarding the postseason.

“If we’ve got any albatross around our neck, it’s that we’ve been a good-to-very-good team during the season over the last four to five years with Mike, and we haven’t done well in the playoffs,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. “So let’s trade some challenges during the season for doing well in the playoffs, if you want to look at it that way.”

Jerry Jones makes a good point.

Dallas has won 12 games in each of the last three seasons under McCarthy, so the Cowboys have had plenty of regular-season success.

For that reason, Dallas probably shouldn’t worry too much about its 44-19 defeat to the Saints. But if that happens in the playoffs, Mike McCarthy will almost certainly be gone.

Of course, the Cowboys will have to make the playoffs for that to even occur.

Dallas looked good in its season-opening win over the Cleveland Browns, but its defense was absolutely shredded against New Orleans.

Considering that the Cowboys had one of the best defenses in the NFL last season, the disaster against the Saints could have just been a blip on the radar.

However, if the Dallas Cowboys’ defense doesn’t right the ship against the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday, perhaps alarm bells may start sounding in the Lone Star State.
