Barry Sanders Makes Major Move Regarding NFL Madden Video Game

NFL legend Barry Sanders has made a significant announcement, revealing his decision to sever ties with EA Sports and withdraw his likeness from the Madden franchise.

The Hall of Fame running back shared his decision via a social media post on Tuesday afternoon, which featured clips of Sanders from previous editions of the iconic video game.

“I have decided after many years to discontinue my relationship with the brand & the products,” Sanders wrote in his post. “I apologize for those that were expecting me in the games.”

While Sanders did not provide further details on his decision, it will notably impact Madden Ultimate Team players, who collect cards to assemble teams consisting of current and former players in the popular game mode.

Throughout his illustrious career, the Detroit Lions icon showcased skills that seemed tailor-made for a video game. Despite retiring after his 10th consecutive 1,000-yard season in 1999, Sanders remains fourth on the NFL’s all-time rushing leaderboard with 15,269 yards. His career average of 5.0 yards per carry reflects his remarkable talent, and he earned two Offensive Player of the Year awards, including an MVP honor in 1997 after rushing for 2,358 yards.

Sanders achieved another milestone when he won a fan vote to feature on the cover of Madden’s 25th-anniversary edition in 2013, making him the sole retired player to receive this honor.

Furthermore, Sanders’ decision eliminates the possibility of his appearance in the upcoming EA Sports College Football 25 game, marking the end of speculation regarding his inclusion in the series’ relaunch. Despite his impressive collegiate career, which culminated in winning the 1988 Heisman Trophy after amassing 2,734 scrimmage yards and 37 touchdowns during his final season at Oklahoma State, Sanders will not be featured in the game.

Fans will miss their favorite player in the Madden franchise and it will be interesting to see if more details emerge about why Barry Sanders decided to make this move.
