U.S., Mexico Shifting Women’s World Cup Focus Away From 2027

The Women’s World Cup is one of the world’s biggest sporting events, and the United States and Mexico were attempting to get in on the next one. Like the 2023 World Cup was hosted jointly by Australia and New Zealand, the United States and Mexico wanted to do something similar for 2027.

Alas, their plans have recently changed. The 2027 World Cup is no longer their focus, as the joint bid between U.S. Soccer and the Mexican Football Federation has been withdrawn. Instead, they will shift their focus to landing the bid for the 2031 World Cup.

A vote for the 2027 World Cup host is set to happen with the FIFA Congress on May 17th in Bangkok, Thailand. The remaining bids to host are from Brazil and a joint bid between Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.

Should Brazil win the bid, it would become the first nation in South America to host a Women’s World Cup. As part of a European joint bid in 2011, Germany was a host in 2011. Both countries have hosted the Men’s World Cup recently as well.

The last time that the United States hosted the Women’s World Cup was back in 1999 and 2003. The 2003 edition of the World Cup was moved to the United States on short notice because of the SARS breakout in China.

Along with Mexico and Canada, they are the host nations for the men’s World Cup. With Los Angeles also hosting the 2028 Summer Olympics, the 2027 Women’s World Cup was not in the best position to earn sponsorship money and other resources, which was partly why the bid was withdrawn.

“Hosting a World Cup tournament is a huge undertaking — and having additional time to prepare allows us to maximize its impact across the globe,” U.S. Soccer president Cindy Parlow Cone said in a statement. “I’m proud of our commitment to provide equitable experiences for the players, fans and all our stakeholders. Shifting our bid will enable us to host a record-breaking Women’s World Cup in 2031 that will help to grow and raise the level of the women’s game both here at home as well as across the globe.”

Record-breaking attendance numbers were forecast had the United States and Mexico joint bid gone through for the 2027 World Cup. 4.5 million fans and more than $3 billion in revenue were expected with massive stadiums and multiple cities being available for games to be played in.
