Houston Astros’ Josh Hader Revals Huge Reason He Signed

Whenever uncertainty looms over the Houston Astros, the franchise has consistently responded with bold moves. With several relievers hitting MLB free agency and the departure of respected catcher Martin Maldonado to the Chicago White Sox, questions began to arise. However, those concerns were quickly put to rest with the high-profile acquisition of Josh Hader.

On January 19, the Astros secured the services of Josh Hader, the premier relief pitcher, in a monumental five-year, $95 million deal.

This signing catapulted Hader into the upper echelon of baseball’s highest-paid bullpen assets. Naturally, such a substantial investment in a reliever might raise eyebrows, especially in light of Edwin Diaz’s season-ending injury shortly after signing a record-breaking contract with the New York Mets in November 2022.

Nonetheless, Hader’s addition significantly bolsters Houston’s chances of vying for another championship.

In a recent quote, Hader spoke out and revealed a major reason why he decided to sign with the Astros over the other teams that were interested in his services.

“The biggest thing- win a World Series. The Houston Astros have done that…When you’re on the field you can see when a team is gelling well and that’s something that we wanted to be a part of.”

The Astros have consistently made deep postseason runs, reaching the American League Championship Series or better for seven consecutive seasons.

In 2023, Josh Hader dazzled with a remarkable 1.28 ERA and an impressive tally of 85 strikeouts in just 56 1/3 innings while playing for the San Diego Padres. While there’s certainly financial risk involved, the partnership between Hader and the Astros seems like a perfect match, with both sides squarely focused on immediate success.

It’s worth noting that Houston did lose Hector Neris to the Chicago Cubs, potentially leaving general manager Dana Brown still on the lookout for additional bullpen support. Nevertheless, the Astros’ back end is undeniably fortified with the addition of Josh Hader.
