Georgia Expected To Steal Rival Alabama’s Star Transfer

Alabama’s star safety, Caleb Downs, is on the verge of entering the transfer portal, and one team seems to have emerged as the frontrunner to secure his talents. That team is the Georgia Bulldogs.

News broke on Wednesday morning that Caleb Downs, who was named the 2023 SEC Freshman of the Year, has expressed his intention to enter the transfer portal.

Now, according to reports from 247Sports’ John Talty and Matt Zenitz, it appears that the University of Georgia is the “clear favorite” to become the next destination for this former five-star recruit.

It’s worth noting that Caleb Downs played his high school football at Hoschton Mill Creek High School in Georgia, and during his recruitment, he was actively pursued by Georgia’s head coach, Kirby Smart. However, in the end, Downs chose to sign with Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Fast forward to today, and the college football landscape has seen some significant changes. Nick Saban has retired as the head coach of the Crimson Tide, which has led several Alabama players and recruits to explore other options.

For the University of Georgia, landing Caleb Downs would be a significant win, especially as they seek to regain supremacy in the SEC after suffering a loss to Alabama in the conference title game this past season.

Caleb Downs, standing at an impressive 6 feet and weighing 203 pounds, received first-team All-SEC honors and made history by leading Alabama in tackles with a remarkable total of 107. He became the first freshman to achieve such a feat since at least 1970.

In addition to his outstanding tackling abilities, Downs also showcased his versatility by recording two interceptions, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and even a punt return touchdown during his time with the Crimson Tide. This versatile skill set makes him an enticing prospect for any college football program, and Georgia appears to be at the forefront of the race to secure his services.
