Rams Linked To Possible Trade For Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa

Could the Los Angeles Rams be interested in trading for Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa? Mike Sando of The Athletic poses the possibility.

Tagovailoa is entering the final year of his rookie deal after the Dolphins picked up his fifth-year option. There are questions as to whether or not Miami will hand him a contract extension or allow him to hit free agency next year, so some are wondering if the Dolphins could entertain trading him this offseason.

Sando sets the stage for a potential deal, saying that it is something the Rams could consider if Matthew Stafford elects to retire.

Of course, Stafford already said he expects to return in 2024, and the idea of Los Angeles trading Stafford for Tagovailoa doesn’t make much sense.

Plus, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier has stated that he wants to keep Tagovailoa around for the long haul, so the two sides will probably discuss a long-term deal in the coming months.

Why is Tagovailoa’s name being floated in trade rumors anyway?

Well, the young signal-caller just put forth a rather putrid showing in his team’s Wild Card Round playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, going 20-for-39 with 199 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

To be fair to Tagovailoa, the weather conditions were horrendous for the game, but questions have surrounded the 25-year-old’s capability under center long before Miami’s Wild Card defeat.

Although Tagovailoa led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards this season, many feel that he is merely a product of receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle and is not the type of quarterback who can lead a team to a Super Bowl. The fact that he struggled late in the year while Hill and Waddle were dealing with injuries only furthered this point.

Regardless, the Dolphins will almost surely enter Week 1 of 2024 with Tua Tagovailoa under center.
