San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is still pushing hard for a move to the Washington Commanders.
At the moment he sits on the team’s reserve/left squad list, which means no deal can take place until he reports back to the organization. That reality leaves many wondering how 49ers general manager John Lynch views the ongoing drama.
According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Lynch has chosen not to dwell on the matter in any detail. Instead the veteran executive has made clear that his attention rests solely with the players currently around the building. When asked about the situation, Lynch offered only a brief comment.
“I’m personally, and we as an organization, are going to focus on the players who are here,” Lynch said. “We wish him well, we wish his family well.”
Those carefully chosen words underscore that the front office has moved on from active discussions involving the absent receiver. Looking back at Aiyuk’s earlier years in the Bay Area reveals a far different story.
Across his first four campaigns he consistently posted more than 700 receiving yards and at least five touchdowns each season. His strongest showing came in 2023, when he earned All-Pro recognition after posting career-best numbers.
A serious knee injury suffered in 2024 cut that progress short and forced him to open the following year on the physically unable to perform list. Midway through the 2025 campaign the relationship between player and team deteriorated further.
San Francisco elected to void the remaining guarantees in Aiyuk’s contract, pointing to what the club described as a lack of participation. Aiyuk never filed a formal grievance, yet he has stayed away from the facility ever since.
In mid-December the 49ers formally placed him on the reserve/left squad list, locking in his inactive status. In recent weeks the receiver has taken to social media with a string of unusual statements.
He has repeatedly declared that he will suit up for the Commanders and has also offered cryptic remarks about various players and teams around the league.
Those posts have prompted some observers to voice concern about possible lingering effects from head trauma or other cognitive issues. Even so, the broader picture remains unchanged: Aiyuk appears finished as a member of the 49ers organization heading into 2026 and beyond.
Whether he lands with another franchise will ultimately depend on the choices he makes in the weeks and months ahead.
