3 Contenders Emerge as Suitors to Poach Klay Thompson from Golden State Warriors

One of the biggest names available during NBA free agency this summer is Klay Thompson. Half of the Golden State Warriors Splash Brothers with Stephen Curry could depart depending on how his market unfolds.

The Warriors organization and players on the team have made it clear they want to retain Klay Thompson. It is hard to imagine he wants to leave, but if he doesn’t receive the kind of offer he is looking for from them, testing the market is certainly possible.

He has already been linked to a few teams this offseason. The Orlando Magic would love to add a player of his caliber as they are desperate for 3-point shooting. His championship experience would be invaluable to a young, up-and-coming team as well.

Most recently, three contenders have emerged as potential suitors to poach him away from the Warriors. According to Sam Amick and Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the Philadelphia 76ers and Denver Nuggets are two teams who will pursue Klay Thompson should he leave Golden State.

The third team to keep an eye on is the Dallas Mavericks. After trading Tim Hardaway Jr. to the Detroit Pistons and clearing some cap space, they are “intent on exploring the feasibility of signing Thompson” per NBA insider Marc Stein.

It was reported previously by Slater that the talks between Klay Thompson and the Warriors were stuck. No traction was gained with the Magic despite there being some mutual interest between the parties.

Pinpointing just how much money Klay Thompson can earn is difficult. Would he be willing to accept an inflated, short-term deal, such as what Matt Moore of Action Network reports the Magic would offer? Something in the range of two years and $50 million was suggested.

Or, would he prefer to secure some long-term security, potentially sacrificing a little bit of money to receive that? His free agency will be one plenty of people keep an eye on as he can still provide solid value for a team in the right role.
