The New York Yankees continue to reshape their roster with the trade deadline approaching, and one intriguing name has surfaced in recent reports involving a potential deal with the San Diego Padres: Ryan Weathers.
Weathers, acquired by the Yankees from the Miami Marlins in a multi-prospect package last offseason, has drawn interest from his former club in San Diego, which comes on the heels of the Padres rejecting an offer from New York that featured Will Warren.
Weathers spent parts of four seasons with the Padres from 2020 to 2023 before being dealt. This year in the Bronx, he has made 21 starts and posted a 4-7 record with a 3.99 ERA.
That performance has kept him in the conversation both as a potential rotation piece and as a candidate to shift into a longer relief role later in the season, where his ability to provide length could prove useful during a playoff push.
According to reporting from The Athletic, the Padres view Weathers as a possible target. The Yankees, meanwhile, have been connected to San Diego’s high-leverage left-hander Adrian Morejon, though no agreement appears close.
Keeping Weathers would make sense given the cost of acquiring him, yet the club also has Warren and other controllable arms it could prefer to retain. League sources indicated that Weathers remains one of several options San Diego has discussed internally.
The Yankees already made one notable addition over the weekend, acquiring utility player Luis García Jr. from the Washington Nationals.
Manager Aaron Boone praised García’s ability to hit right-handed pitching and expressed optimism that he could provide a spark for an offense that has struggled at times.
García’s left-handed bat gives the team additional flexibility at first base and designated hitter alongside Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt, even if the fit is not perfectly seamless.
Starter Gerrit Cole welcomed the organization’s willingness to improve the roster, noting that Yankees players can trust the front office to push for upgrades when opportunities arise. New York sits in pursuit of the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East and appears motivated to add both offense and bullpen help before the deadline.
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported that the Yankees are open to moving controllable starting pitching if it helps complete a larger deal. Weathers, with two years of club control remaining, sits alongside Will Warren and others as a potential chip in those conversations.
Whether he ends up back in San Diego or stays in New York, his situation underscores the fluid nature of the Yankees’ pitching depth as they look to strengthen their position for the stretch run.
