The New York Yankees spent Friday in the Bronx with the Baltimore Orioles for a doubleheader, and the first game did not go their way. Baltimore rolled to a 10-2 win, leaving the Yankees looking for a quick reset before the nightcap.

They got that rebound on the scoreboard, taking the second game 6-3, but the more lasting news of the afternoon came off the field.

Before the second game, the club announced that it had signed 25-year-old right-hander Alexander Cornielle to a major-league contract and selected him to the active roster.

The move is his first look at the majors. Cornielle is in his first season in the Yankees organization after earlier minor-league time with the Milwaukee Brewers, and he arrived from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre without any previous big-league innings.

The timing was practical as much as promotional.

With a doubleheader on the schedule and innings to cover, New York optioned another pitcher and brought Cornielle up to absorb work in the nightcap.

That kind of September call-up is familiar around the league, especially for a team still grinding through the final weekend of the regular season.

Fans on social media immediately treated it as both a curiosity and a punch line, joking that the club had misspelled another prospect’s name or wondering why a different arm was not the one getting the call.

A former affiliate account congratulated Cornielle and noted that he would become another player from that club’s pipeline to reach the majors this year.

The Yankees themselves are not playing for atmosphere. At 92-68 through 160 games, they sit second in the American League East and have gone 5-5 over their last ten. They are 45-34 at home.

Next week they host the Boston Red Sox in a three-game playoff series, the latest chapter in a rivalry that has already met seven times in the postseason and is tied 3-3 in those meetings.

Cornielle’s debut, if it comes in this series or shortly after, will not rewrite that larger picture by itself. What it does is fill a need and give a 25-year-old a chance he had not yet received.

For a club that just split a doubleheader and is about to turn toward October, that is the kind of small roster move that often gets forgotten unless the pitcher makes it memorable.

Friday at least put his name on the list.
