The announcement, made through the club’s probable pitchers list, gives the Bronx Bombers their ace for the rubber game of a series that begins Tuesday after a Monday off day.
Cole enters the matchup with a 7-6 record, a 3.11 ERA and 100 strikeouts. He will oppose Houston right-hander Hayden Wesneski, who is 3-1 with a 4.23 ERA. For a Yankees rotation still piecing itself together after injuries, putting Cole on the mound for the series closer is both a statement of confidence and a practical choice.
Ryan Weathers recently landed on the injured list and Max Fried remains sidelined, leaving Wednesday’s starter still to be determined. Will Warren is scheduled for Tuesday against Ethan Pecko.
Even with those absences, New York’s pitching staff has been among the most effective in the majors. The team ERA sits at 3.37, the WHIP at 1.19, and the staff has piled up 1,030 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .226 batting average.
Those numbers have helped the Yankees stay in the thick of the American League race at 74-56, three games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for the league’s best record. After wrapping up with Houston, they will host a Boston Red Sox club that sits three games behind them.
Cole’s presence on Thursday also fits the longer-term picture the Yankees have in mind.
When healthy, the rotation they envision features Cam Schlittler, Fried, Carlos Rodón, Cole and either Weathers or Warren. Until that group can take the mound together, the club is leaning on the veterans and the young arms who have already carried them this far.
Cole has been a steadying force in that mix, giving manager Aaron Boone a reliable option when the series is on the line.
The Astros arrive in the Bronx after dropping two of three to New York last weekend, including an 8-3 loss on Sunday.
A Thursday start from Cole offers the Yankees a chance to take the series and keep momentum heading into a high-stakes weekend against Boston.
