ESPN’s Jorge Castillo has floated one of the more intriguing hypotheticals of the season: a deal that would send Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor — who signed a 10-year, $341 million contract with the Mets just before 2021 — across town to the Yankees.
The idea is pure fantasy baseball theater, the kind of proposal that ignores the real-world friction of interborough rivalries and focuses instead on what each club might gain if emotions were set aside.
Castillo frames the concept simply. The Yankees have a clear need at shortstop and could use another high-impact bat while Aaron Judge recovers from a rib injury. Lindor, still a productive, switch-hitting star with a full no-trade clause, would remain in New York and immediately join a club chasing a championship.
For the Mets, the appeal would be shedding a substantial long-term financial commitment — five years and roughly $160 million remaining after this season — while also separating Lindor from Juan Soto, a pairing that Castillo describes as clearly not working.
The return package, in Castillo’s sketch, would hinge on how much of Lindor’s remaining salary the Mets are willing to absorb. The Yankees would almost certainly keep their top prospect, George Lombard Jr., whose ability to play third base fills another organizational hole.
Instead, Castillo suggests a secondary shortstop prospect such as Dax Kilby, the club’s first-round selection from a year earlier, might be the kind of piece that could anchor a more realistic discussion.
Whether such a trade could ever move beyond the realm of expert brainstorming is another matter. Crosstown deals involving star players are rare for a reason.
Yet Castillo’s proposal underscores the practical pressures both franchises face as the Aug. 3 deadline approaches.
The Yankees are searching for immediate upgrades that can stabilize the middle of the diamond and the lineup. The Mets are weighing whether a high-salary, high-profile shortstop still fits the direction of a roster that has not produced the results expected when Lindor and Soto were paired.
In the end, the suggestion serves less as a prediction and more as a useful thought experiment. It highlights the Yankees’ positional need, the Mets’ contractual burden, and the theoretical possibility that two clubs sharing a city might someday find mutual benefit in a player exchange most fans would once have considered unthinkable.
