Austin Wells has shouldered the majority of the workload, earning 45 starts so far. J.C. Escarra has appeared in 22 games as the primary backup. While neither player has stood out in a positive way, Wells has managed to provide slightly better production compared to his counterpart.
In 145 at-bats this year, the 26-year-old Wells has recorded 15 runs, 24 hits, four home runs, and seven runs batted in. He has drawn 23 walks but carries a negative WAR of -0.2. His batting line sits at .166/.278/.255, resulting in a modest .533 OPS that underscores the need for improvement.
Given their ambitions of reaching the World Series, the Yankees are widely anticipated to pursue upgrades across the roster. With the August 3 trade deadline approaching, front office decision-makers are likely evaluating external solutions to bolster the catching corps and address this notable weakness.
Several potential targets have surfaced in recent discussions. Among them, Washington Nationals backstop Keibert Ruiz stands out as a practical and attainable choice for New York. This assessment comes from industry analysts monitoring the market closely.
“I think more realistic options include Ryan Jeffers of the Twins (once he gets healthy), Agustín Ramírez of the Marlins, Joey Bart of the Pirates, Carson Kelly of the Cubs, Gabriel Moreno of the Diamondbacks and Keibert Ruiz of the Nationals,” Bowden wrote.
Ruiz, at 27 years old, is enjoying one of the strongest stretches of his major league tenure since debuting in 2020. Across 46 games and 146 at-bats, he has tallied 21 runs scored, 41 hits, six home runs, and 29 RBIs. With just four walks, his slash line reads .281/.301/.500, accompanied by a solid .801 OPS that reflects improved power and contact.
The Venezuela-born catcher brings additional appeal due to his long-term team control. Following an eight-year, $50 million contract extension with Washington, Ruiz remains under contract through 2030. The deal also features club options worth $12 million for 2031 and $14 million for 2032, offering flexibility for any acquiring team.
Meanwhile, the current Yankees tandem continues to underperform. Escarra, in particular, has posted a disappointing .488 OPS, highlighting the urgency for change. As the midpoint of the season nears, this production gap has prompted serious internal conversations about external reinforcements.
Acquiring a player like Ruiz could provide the Yankees with a much-needed boost. His combination of recent offensive output and favorable contractual terms positions him as a compelling candidate.
