Minnesota Vikings legend Adrian Peterson has placed Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson at the top of the current NFL running back rankings, calling him the best pound-for-pound player at the position.

The former Minnesota Vikings star offered the assessment during a recent conversation with Jordan Schultz. Peterson ranked his top five backs with Robinson first, followed by Jonathan Taylor, Kenneth Walker, Derrick Henry and Jahmyr Gibbs.

“That kid right there, he’s special,” Peterson said. “Pound for pound, I think he’s the best running back in the league right now. Hands down.”

Peterson cited Robinson’s vision, explosiveness and ability to make defenders miss as key reasons for the ranking. He also noted similarities in how the two cut.

“Those cuts are awesome, you know, kind of reminds me of myself a little bit,” Peterson said. “He has elite vision and that’s something that I noticed off top.”

Peterson added that only a couple of other backs get him as excited to watch.

“There’s about two or three backs I get excited to watch and he’s one of them,” he said.

On whether Robinson could contend for MVP, Peterson saw the possibility if the production continues.

“Yeah, he has the potential. I can tell you that much,” Peterson said. “I wouldn’t be surprised at all, especially if he keep up with the season he’s having this year.”

Robinson has backed up the praise with early-season numbers. Through five games he leads the NFL with 580 rushing yards on 102 carries, averaging 5.7 yards per attempt with four touchdowns.

He also has 18 receptions for 152 yards and one receiving touchdown. Pro Football Focus data shows he has forced 21 missed tackles as a runner.

Recent games have highlighted the production. Robinson rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns against Green Bay, then followed with 145 yards and two scores against New Orleans.

The totals put him ahead of Kenneth Walker III (537 yards) and James Cook (532 yards) in the league rushing standings after five weeks.

Atlanta signed Robinson to a three-year extension worth up to $75 million with $51 million guaranteed in August. The deal briefly made him the highest-paid running back in NFL history by average annual value.

Robinson, the No. 8 overall pick in 2023, has studied film of Peterson as part of his preparation. He has spoken about learning how the former MVP identified free hitters before plays developed.

Peterson finished his 14-season career with 14,918 rushing yards. His endorsement adds to the growing case for Robinson as one of the league’s most complete backs early in 2026.

The Falcons host the Chicago Bears in Week 6 with Robinson continuing to carry a heavy workload as both a runner and receiver.
