Tankathon’s latest 2027 NFL mock draft has the Minnesota Vikings selecting Miami quarterback Darian Mensah in the first round, placing him at No. 18 overall as the fifth quarterback off the board.
The projection arrives as Minnesota’s quarterback situation remains unsettled after one week. Kyler Murray left Sunday’s opener with a concussion. Carson Wentz finished a 39-22 win over Green Bay. J.J. McCarthy, the No. 10 pick in 2024, was inactive as the emergency third quarterback.
Mensah, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound redshirt junior from San Luis Obispo, California, has opened 2026 with video-game numbers. He is 41 of 45 for 653 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions, a 91.1 completion rate and a 271.7 passer rating.
He threw for 401 yards and five scores in a 45-6 win at Stanford, then added 252 yards and three touchdowns in a 77-7 rout of Florida A&M. Both games came in the first two weeks with Miami.
“Obviously, we’ve got elite receivers,” Mensah said after the Stanford game. “We’ve got really talented dudes outside. And so leaving them one-on-one is … great for me, to be honest, because it makes my job easy. I know where I’m going with the football before I catch the ball. I think that you’ve got to pick your poison, kind of: You either stop the run or you stop the pass.”
Those early results follow a 2025 season at Duke in which Mensah completed 66.8 percent of his passes for 3,973 yards, 34 touchdowns and six interceptions. He set school records and earned second-team All-ACC honors before transferring to Miami.
Career totals now stand at 7,349 passing yards, 64 touchdowns and 12 interceptions across 29 games at Tulane, Duke and Miami.
Tankathon lists Mensah as the No. 22 prospect and the No. 5 quarterback on its board. Arch Manning, Dante Moore, C.J. Carr and Julian Sayin are projected ahead of him in Round 1.
Minnesota drafted McCarthy to be the long-term answer. Injuries and inconsistent play have stalled that plan. Murray signed as a short-term starter. Wentz is the veteran insurance policy.
A first-round quarterback in 2027 would be another reset. Mensah is a pocket passer with touch on the deep ball and a history of high-volume production. Scouts have flagged his slight frame and limited rushing value as questions for the next level.
The Vikings opened 1-0. Early draft order models still have them in the middle of the first round, not the top 10. Tankathon updates after every game and factors team needs.
If Minnesota’s quarterback carousel continues, Mensah’s accuracy and production will stay on the board. If Murray returns and steadies the offense, the pick could slide toward defense or the offensive line.
For now, the mock has a Miami transfer landing in a market that has spent two years waiting for McCarthy to take hold. The season is young. The numbers Mensah is posting are not.
