Tom Brady turned a nostalgic moment during Sunday’s Fox broadcast into a familiar jab at the Buffalo Bills.
The retired quarterback was in the booth with Kevin Burkhardt for the Week 3 matchup between Buffalo and the Los Angeles Chargers at the team’s new Highmark Stadium.
Conversation shifted to the old Highmark Stadium, the venue where the Bills played throughout Brady’s 23-year NFL career.
A photo of the aging facility appeared on screen.
“I lost twice in that stadium,” Brady said. “Which would leave a bitter taste in my mouth … if I didn’t win in the 33 other times I played against the Bills.”
Brady finished his regular-season career 33-3 against Buffalo. He won seven Super Bowls and appeared in 10.
Those two losses in Orchard Park still stand out because they were so rare. One came in 2003, a 31-0 defeat that helped spark a Patriots turnaround later that season.
On the field Sunday, the current Bills showed they have moved on. They rallied for a 24-16 victory and improved to 3-0.
The win came in the second regular-season game at the new stadium, a $2.1 billion venue that opened this year after the original Highmark Stadium served the franchise since 1973.
Brady, now a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, signed a 10-year, $375 million contract with Fox Sports in 2023. He began broadcasting in 2024 after delaying his start one year.
His playing career earned him $332.9 million. He was a sixth-round pick, 199th overall, in the 2000 draft and spent 20 seasons with New England before three years with Tampa Bay.
The old stadium is slated for demolition next year. Fans have already been able to buy seats and memorabilia from the building that hosted so many of Brady’s wins.
Buffalo entered the game 2-0 under first-year head coach Joe Brady. Josh Allen has been one of the league’s top performers through three weeks.
The Chargers arrived 0-2 and looking for their first win. They could not hold off Buffalo’s second-half surge.
Brady’s comment was typical of the dry humor he has brought to the booth. It also underscored a long-running AFC East rivalry that defined much of his prime.
The new stadium features modern amenities and a canopy covering much of the seating bowl, a sharp contrast to the wind-swept old venue Brady remembered so well.
Bills fans have waited years for a modern home. Sunday they watched their team stay undefeated while the man who used to torment them offered a reminder of how things used to go.
