Tarik Skubal’s departure from the Detroit Tigers earlier this season marked the end of a dominant stretch in the Motor City, but his looming free agency has revived questions about whether the club could reverse course and bring the left-hander back.

The Tigers dealt Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers before the trade deadline in exchange for a package of three prospects, a move that closed the door on his time with the only organization he had known in the majors.

Skubal joined a Dodgers roster built for another championship run, with the club aiming for a third consecutive World Series title. Those ambitions ended abruptly when the Milwaukee Brewers swept them out of the National League Championship Series.

With the season over, Skubal is set to enter unrestricted free agency and is widely expected to land a contract in the neighborhood of $400 million.

That price tag has made his market one of the most closely watched of the offseason, and MLB insider Mark Feinsand recently included the Tigers among the teams that could pursue him.

Feinsand noted that any return would require a “monster” deal and expressed skepticism that Detroit would enter a full-scale bidding war. In his free-agent profile, he wrote:

“Although Detroit made the difficult decision to move Skubal before the Trade Deadline, the pitcher said he ‘would love to return’ to the Tigers as a free agent,” Feinsand wrote. “Could the Tigers shock the world by trading Skubal for three prospects in early August, then bringing him back with a monster free-agent deal only a few months later? It seems unlikely that the Tigers will get involved in a bidding war, so if Skubal is determined to get every last dollar, it probably won’t result in a return to the Motor City.”

Skubal himself has left the door open. Not long after the trade, he appeared on the “Pardon My Take” podcast and made clear that a reunion would be welcome.

“I would love to play my whole career in Detroit. I would love to,” he said. “And hopefully those negotiations can pick back up in November once the playoffs are done. We’ll see where that goes. Hopefully they’re involved with everything. I would love to return. I got nothing but good things to say about the city of Detroit.”

Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris responded to those remarks by saying he was not surprised. “I’m not surprised,” Harris said. “Our players love playing here.

The organization has done a ton to make this a destination and a place that players feel really supported here. As far as reaction about free agency or anything like that, I can’t really go into that for all the obvious reasons.

But it’s a tribute to all the people behind the scenes who are working so hard to support our players and create an environment and facilities here that bring out the best in the players. And so it’s a credit to them, and it’s very validating to hear those comments.”

Whether Detroit is willing to match the massive financial commitment Skubal is expected to command remains the central uncertainty.

The Tigers moved him once already this year, and reacquiring him only months later would represent one of the more dramatic reversals in recent free-agent history.

Skubal’s public comments have kept the possibility alive, but the market will ultimately decide whether the Motor City has a realistic shot at welcoming him back.
