MLB star pitcher, who underwent surgery for a herniated disc last December, was not expected back on the mound until mid-summer. However, recent developments suggest he could return much sooner.

Texas manager Bruce Bochy shared with Jon Morosi of MLB Network that Scherzer is scheduled to start his minor-league rehab assignment this coming Wednesday. This news coincides with the Rangers’ showdown against the Braves, which is featured as the Showcase Game at 7 p.m. ET.

Earlier reports indicated that Scherzer’s recovery was progressing more quickly than anticipated, potentially setting the stage for a May return to the major leagues.

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, Scherzer remains cautiously optimistic.

“He’s still a little bit cautious about this whole thing only because he has to pass each step with everything checked off,” Rosenthal said. “But so far so good — he has checked every box and they’re looking forward to him returning much sooner than expected,” Rosenthal reported.

In a February update, Scherzer himself noted that he felt “great” and was pain-free, though he continued to approach his recovery with caution. As of this Wednesday, he was observed playing catch, though he hasn’t yet resumed pitching against live hitters.

The return of Scherzer would significantly bolster the Rangers’ pitching lineup, which is currently depleted. In addition to Scherzer’s absence, the team is also missing Cody Bradford, Jacob deGrom, and Tyler Mahle due to various ailments.

Bradford recently went on a 15-day injured list due to back soreness after a strong start to the season, posting a 1.40 ERA in three starts. Both deGrom and Mahle are still on the mend from Tommy John surgeries performed last year.

Max Scherzer’s career achievements highlight his pivotal role on the team. A three-time CY Young award winner, Scherzer has made significant impacts at each of his MLB stops, including stints with the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, Washington Nationals, Detroit Tigers, and Arizona Diamondbacks.

His resume features eight All-Star selections, two World Series titles, and 214 career victories, which include two seasons with at least 20 wins.

As the Rangers cope with the absence of Mahle and deGrom and the recent departure of Jordan Montgomery to the Arizona Diamondbacks, Scherzer’s return is keenly anticipated. His comeback is crucial for Texas as they aim to replicate or surpass last year’s journey to the World Series championship.
