Texas Longhorns fans have heard Steve Sarkisian’s name whispered in NFL circles before, and the latest round of Green Bay Packers speculation is unlikely to rattle anyone who has watched what he has built in Austin.
After the Packers opened 2026 with another late collapse, this time a 39-22 Week 1 loss to Minnesota after holding a comfortable lead, the conversation around Matt LaFleur’s future flared again.
That is the backdrop for a list of possible successors, and Sarkisian is on it because of the program he has restored on the Forty Acres, not because Austin is suddenly looking for an exit.
Evan Massey of Packers Roundtable included Sarkisian among five names to watch if Green Bay’s season continues to slide, noting that the Texas coach was already discussed last offseason as a possible NFL hire and that he has posted a 50-20 record since taking over the Longhorns in 2021.
From a Texas vantage point, those numbers only hint at the larger story. Sarkisian inherited a program that had drifted for more than a decade and turned it into a consistent national contender, complete with playoff runs, an SEC-ready roster, and a pipeline that keeps feeding the NFL.
The Longhorns are no longer a reconstruction project. They are a destination, and that is why every rumor lands differently in Austin than it does in Green Bay.
Sarkisian’s appeal to an NFL team is obvious on paper. He is an offensive teacher who has developed quarterbacks and skill players at a high rate, and he already has a short professional résumé as a former Falcons coordinator.
Packers brass, if forced to look beyond LaFleur, would see a coach who can design an attack for Jordan Love and sell a culture that recruits and develops talent. Texas supporters would counter that those same strengths are exactly why he should stay.
The Longhorns have invested heavily in this era, from facilities to staff to the expectation that Arch Manning’s final college season is about more than a résumé boost for the head coach. Sarkisian himself has said he hopes to retire at Texas, and he is under contract through 2031 after an extension that followed the 2024 season.
That does not make the Packers chatter meaningless. College coaches with NFL pedigrees will always draw interest when a flagship franchise wobbles.
Green Bay’s late-game issues have become a pattern, and a change at the top would send teams hunting for proven program builders. Sarkisian fits that description.
He also fits the description of a coach who has spent years telling Texas fans that the work in Austin is unfinished.
The Longhorns still chase the signature wins that separate good seasons from championship ones, and the program’s NFL pipeline, which Sarkisian has pushed toward historic levels, is part of that unfinished business rather than a reason to leave.
For Texas, the healthiest way to read a Packers rumor is as a compliment, not a countdown. Sarkisian made the Longhorns relevant again.
If Green Bay keeps stumbling, his name will keep appearing. That does not mean the Forty Acres is about to lose him. It means the rest of football has noticed what Burnt Orange already lives with every Saturday.
