The Houston Texans have spent the last two weeks patching a receiver room that lost its most promising young piece and still feels one veteran short of what C.J. Stroud needs in September.

That is why New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton suddenly looks less like a leftover Giant and more like a plausible NRG Stadium target before the dust of roster cutdowns fully settles.

Ryan Dunleavy of The New York Post reported that the Giants shopped Slayton in the final 48 hours before cut day and that Houston has shown past interest in acquiring him, a detail that lands differently in Houston than it does in East Rutherford.

Dunleavy also noted that a trade would improve New York’s cap picture and that Slayton’s place on the 53 is not as secure as his eight-year tenure might suggest, especially after Odell Beckham Jr. survived the cut in a full-circle return.

For Texans general manager Nick Caserio, that is the kind of market signal worth a phone call.

Houston’s urgency is real. Second-year receiver Jayden Higgins tore his ACL in a joint practice, Tank Dell was placed on injured reserve, and the club already flipped for Kayshon Boutte while releasing veterans Zay Jones and Sterling Shepard on cutdown day. Nico Collins remains the clear No. 1.

Boutte, Jaylin Noel and Xavier Hutchinson give Stroud complementary pieces. What the group still lacks is a proven outside vertical threat who can punish single coverage when Collins draws the extra hat.

Slayton has spent his career in that role. He has scored 22 receiving touchdowns throughout his NFL tenure and has averaged 15.0 yards per catch, with four seasons of at least 700 yards.

The fit is imperfect on paper. Slayton is 29, coming off sports hernia surgery, and carries a 2026 cap charge north of $15 million that New York would almost certainly have to eat in part.

Houston just finished trimming the roster and does not need another expensive insurance policy if Boutte holds up as the second option. But Caserio has never been shy about adding a veteran who can stretch the field without asking to be the offense, and Slayton already has a tape against this franchise: a 54-yard touchdown in a 2022 win over the Texans.

Any deal would likely be a late-round pick plus salary relief, not a splash. That is still a conversation worth having in a building that expects to contend in the AFC.

If New York is surveying the market and Houston is still one reliable outside receiver short, Slayton is no longer just a Giants problem. He is a Texans possibility.
