Tampa Bay Rays Part Ways With Former High Draft Pick

The Tampa Bay Rays designated outfielder Jake Fraley for assignment Sunday, opening a roster spot to activate infielder Ben Williamson from the 10-day injured list, via the MLB transaction log.

Williamson had been sidelined about a month and a half with a right hamstring strain.

The move closes another chapter in a reunion that never quite took hold.

Fraley, a left-handed-hitting corner outfielder, was Tampa Bay’s second-round pick in 2016 — 77th overall out of LSU — before the club traded him to Seattle in November 2018.

He later spent several seasons with Cincinnati and a brief stretch with Atlanta, then returned when the Rays claimed him off waivers last November. After a subsequent DFA and non-tender, Tampa Bay re-signed him to a one-year, $3 million contract with roster bonuses.

The 2026 season did not go as planned. Fraley landed on the injured list in mid-May with a sports hernia, underwent surgery, and later moved to the 60-day IL.

He started a rehab assignment in late June, hit a setback, and was not activated until Sept. 15.

In limited action with the Rays, he batted in the low .220s with two home runs and three stolen bases over roughly 30 games. Career numbers through mid-September stood at a .246 average, 49 home runs and 184 RBIs.

A designation for assignment gives the Rays seven days to trade Fraley, release him or place him on waivers. If he clears waivers, he can be outrighted to the minors if he has remaining options; otherwise he would become a free agent.

At 31, he remains a left-handed bat who has historically performed better against right-handed pitching and can play the outfield corners, but availability has been a recurring issue.

The corresponding move reflects Tampa Bay’s late-season roster math.

Williamson’s return adds infield depth as the club sorts playing time in a crowded outfield.

Fraley’s brief second stint with the organization that drafted him ends, at least for now, the same way many of his recent chapters have: with a transaction notice and a search for the next opportunity.

Whether another team claims him before the week is out will determine if 2016’s second-round pick gets one more look this season — or if this DFA is the last stop on a winding major-league path that began in the Rays’ system a decade ago.
