The Minnesota Vikings’ decision to install Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback has left 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy’s future in limbo.

While the organization could still choose to develop the former Michigan standout as a backup, the move has sparked widespread discussion about where McCarthy might find a better opportunity to restart his NFL career.

On that note, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox has identified as stunning potential landing spot for the young signal-caller: the Los Angeles Chargers.

Unlike several other potential destinations, the Chargers already possess a clear long-term answer under center in Justin Herbert. The veteran remains a reliable, above-average starter still in his prime at age 28. That stability, however, does not diminish the value Los Angeles could offer McCarthy.

In a backup role, the young quarterback would gain the chance to reset mentally and technically without the immediate pressure of competing for a starting job in a high-stakes environment.

What makes the Chargers particularly intriguing is the personal connection. Head coach Jim Harbaugh guided McCarthy through a national championship run at Michigan, and offensive assistant Kirk Campbell previously served as his quarterbacks coach with the Wolverines.

Reuniting with those familiar voices could help restore the confidence and leadership traits that once elevated McCarthy’s draft stock. After two uneven seasons in Minnesota, that kind of supportive, familiar setting might prove invaluable for a player still early in his professional journey.

The offensive infrastructure in Los Angeles further strengthens the case. New coordinator Mike McCarthy brings a reputation for creative play-calling, and the supporting cast is loaded with talent.

An offensive line anchored by Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt provides protection, while skill players such as Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston, and Omarion Hampton give any quarterback weapons to work with. Even limited practice and preseason opportunities in that system could sharpen McCarthy’s game.

History offers a useful parallel. Malik Willis spent time developing as a backup in Green Bay before earning a starting opportunity elsewhere.

With two years remaining on his rookie contract, McCarthy could follow a similar path—growing quietly in a stable environment before positioning himself for a larger role down the road.

For a player whose career trajectory has shifted dramatically in a short time, the Chargers represent a landing spot that prioritizes development, familiarity, and long-term potential over immediate snaps.
